(E) The first time I saw somebody flagging was when I lived in Mexico in 2004. A Mexican friend who ironically had bought his pair of flags in Brazil, when he was there on vacation. I got charmed with the fusion of colors and with the possibility of creating moves by the the music's rhythm. Of course I asked him to try and it was magic. After that, I was sure I'd buy a pair for me as soon as I´d found them. The time has passed...
In Miami, on ends of 2015, I was doing an images research on my computer and I found an image of a circus flagger. I had a funny feeling, like we feel when we see a toy we once had in a childhood picture. That image reignited the enchantment I felt with the flags and at that time, the internet helped me to get some. When the flags I ordered arrived, I went down the stairs to the pool area of the condominium where I lived and I had so much fun. Then, I started to carry my new toy in my backpack. I used to ride my bike from West Avenue with 13th Street, passing by the South Pointe Park and from there to the whole South Beach border until 73th Street in North Beach. When I found an open area like a garden, square or even the beach, I stopped and flagged.
Distant from Brazil, family and friends, in a different city with new challenge and obstacles to overcome, those flags helped me to put out the feeling I was holding inside. The drawing "Flagging" is an homage to that time.
